Top story:

Playground Built in a Day

Almost 300 community volunteers joined forces to build a new state-of-the-art 2,500 square foot playground in a neighborhood park in Federal Way’s Westway community. Rain and chilly weather were offset by the delicious bar-b-que and energetic music which kept spirits high throughout the day.

Thank you to KaBoom! The Home Depot Foundation, Federal Way Public Schools AmeriCorps members, the Build the Bridge Coalition and the many Westway residents who helped cook, build and provided support and utilities for the build. Public figures joining in the effort were Mike Gregoire, the First Gentleman of Washington, State Senator Tracey Eide, State Representative Skip Priest, Federal Way City Council Member Jeanne Burbidge and several State AmeriCorps representatives.

Bruce's climb

Bruce Stobie has been blind for 25 years, due to an accident at age 20. Amazingly, on July 12-14, 2009 Bruce will climb Mt. Rainier on behalf of Habitat for Humanity Seattle/South King County.

Bruce has been moved by the mission of Habitat to eradicate sub-standard housing throughout our community. For him, climbing Mt. Rainier is a life-long dream. He has wanted to climb Mt. Rainier since he was four years old and reaffirmed this goal when he lost his sight. He sees his training and efforts to achieve his dream as similar to the hard work of Habitat partner families. “I am not doing this alone – I am blessed to have the support of family, friends and strangers. Much in the same way, I see the efforts of Habitat like the experience I have had with overcoming the loss of sight. It takes the collective work of many to make things happen and to overcome barriers.”

His goal is to raise $25,000 for Habitat, symbolizing $1,000 for every year he has been blind. Please join us in supporting Bruce and helping him meet his goal. You can make a gift on-line at by clicking here and selecting “Bruce’s Climb” under “Donation Purpose”.

Family support team: Partnership in action

The Family Support Team is one of the most important volunteer positions we have. The Team works to support families in three main ways: providing homeowner education classes, providing families with support partners to see them through the homebuilding process, and connecting families with community resources. These essential volunteers have the privilege of working closely with future Habitat homeowners and get to enjoy the camaraderie of building homes – the best of both worlds! We currently have families building in Rainier Vista, High Point and getting ready to build in Pacific who need to be partnered with Family Support Partners. If you are interested in learning more about the Family Support Team and the various opportunities it offers to be engaged with homebuyer families please attend one of the upcoming information sessions! This volunteer opportunity is open both to individuals and teams (generally 2 people). The next meetings will be Tuesday, July 7th at 6pm and Wednesday, July 8th at 10am at our office in Tukwila. Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Established in 1986 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to build decent, affordable homes for families in need.

Since 1986 our local affiliate has built simple, decent affordable housing in partnership with 135 very low-income families. Habitat is not a giveaway program. Homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their Habitat house and they pay a no-profit, no-interest mortgage.

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need. Habitat has built more than 250,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.
